If everything goes as planned, during this time next month I will be living in Accra, Ghana, West Africa and teaching Art Foundations (Design & Color, Drawing, and Art History) at the Joyce Ababio College of Creative Design. It was previously called the Vogue Style School of Fashion and Design, when it exclusively offered a certificate program in Fashion Design. It has now expanded to include Associate's and Bachelor's Degrees in Fashion Design and Entrepreneurship and later it will include degrees in Graphic Design.
Many of you know that Ghana, Africa has inspired most of my drawings, paintings, prints, iPad art, and masks since my weeklong trip there in August 2009. A large part of my inspiration is related to fashion in Ghana. Who would have thought I would teach at a fashion school in Ghana? I will only fully believe it when I get there. So, I'll update you to tell you if I am there this time next month. I plan to keep a blog about my experiences in Ghana. It is amazing how much kente cloth inspires pride for African Americans, but we rarely know or discuss where it comes from. Education and sharing, through my experiences in this very important country, will be the purpose of my blog. |
