Dear Friends,

Happy back to school to parents, children, educators, and administrators!

I would like to share my recent iPad portraits with you.  I have begun to explore color and more detail in my Ukiyoe iPad app.

I would also like to share a two-part video of my art lecture on July 13th at Community Book Center.  I talked about the inspiration for my art with particular focus on my Ghana series.  I have posted it here on my blog.

Please feel free and encouraged to give me your input.  Thanks for reading and viewing my work!

Best Wishes,

Amy

Three versions of a portrait of Sue Jane Smock, New Orleans based, internationally renowned Woodcut Printmaker

Dear Friends,

Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, and Happy Hanukkah!!!

I would like to show you my latest artwork, three versions of a portrait of Woodcut Printmaker, Sue Jane Smock.  I also want to let you know that I will continue living in New Orleans, Louisiana.  My move to Accra, Ghana was postponed from October to January as a result of unanticipated factors and I decided to stay in New Orleans, continuing to pursue my art and community projects.

Sue Jane Smock, the portrait's subject, is an internationally renowned, New Orleans based, artist born in 1937 who specializes in woodcut printmaking.  As a woman of color she broke through many glass ceilings that were rarely accessible to women artists of color at an earlier time in her life.  One major achievement was a solo show at the Smithsonian in 1967.  Another was participation in a group show with Picasso in 1970.

I met her in the early 2000's when a beloved member of the arts community in New Orleans, the former Dr. G. Jeannette Hodge, introduced her to me.  Sue Jane Smock was teaching woodcut printmaking as an Artist-In-Residence at Dillard University then.  I met her again when I was teaching printmaking at Dillard University from 2006 to 2010 and she became a mentor and friend.

My plan is to interview her and shed more light on this amazing artist in the future.

Enjoy your holiday,
Amy Bryan

Dear Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope you have lots of greens, since they are very healthy and a holiday favorite.  I thought about these factors when I did an iPad portrait in October of Nana Anoa Nantambu holding mustard greens at a garden called Backyard Gardeners Network in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana.

Since August, I have been teaching art workshops with the Backyard Gardeners Network's Lower 9 Growing Strong Program founded by Jenga Mwendo.  The workshops are for elders and children, especially from the Lower 9th Ward community.  Every time I go I see all the vegetables growing there: collards, mustards, broccoli, okra, etc.  I also see 9th Ward residents learning to grow them.

I was having a conversation with Nana Anoa Nantambu, who was there one day, about how much she loves greens now and also when she was growing up.  We related because my mother talks about something similar.  My mother told her mother she only wanted fresh collard greens, not frozen or canned, when she was a child.  Nana Anoa and my mother are about the same age and they both grew up in the Jim Crow South.  Maybe they valued what now seems like little things when there was such a lack of opportunity in Southern towns.  Family and good food...soul food...food for your soul...was strength.

Hopefully this Thanksgiving we will have food for our souls, remember all we are thankful for, and remember those in need.

Dear Friends,

I am not in Ghana yet.  I have been moving out of my house, though, and making preparations.  I became a homeowner in 2011 and below is a painting my sister, Alma Bryan Powell, did about that called "My Sister's New House".  As you can see, the walls are empty, but there is a child's toy in the foreground that belongs to her son.  My sister, Courtney, is also in the painting.  This painting says it all about that time period up to now and it is my "art to share".  I will leave it up to your interpretation.  Moving out of my house and preparing to rent it out made me think of this painting.

My Sister, Alma, is a painter and we attended Howard University in Washington DC together.  She was an undergraduate while I was a graduate student in the Art Department.  We both graduated in 2002.  Then she went on to earn her Master of Fine Arts from University of California at Davis in 2005.  Her art bog is http://almabryanpowell.tumblr.com/ and she may be reached at alma_bryan@hotmail.com.
