May 2014 View this email in your browser Greetings Friends, Happy Memorial Day Weekend in the US! Above and below is a piece I created on the iPad called Mother and Child in the Garden, the color and black and white versions.  It is inspired by a mother and daughter I met in the 9th Ward of New Orleans at the weekly art workshop I teach.  The mother explained to me that she wants her daughter to learn about growing vegetables, since an interesting story was passed down to her from her mother.  Her mother grew up during a time when people used to grow vegetables in their backyards very often, and they used to exchange them.  I found that to be such an interesting and unselfish way of getting together great dishes, saving money, and collaborating. Two Great Exhibits I saw in New York Last Week I want to share my photos with you from the two art exhibits I saw on my trip to New York City last week, the exhibits of Kara Walker and Jean Michel Basquiat.  If you click on the names it will take you to my Facebook photo albums of the exhibits and two photos are below.  The photo below from the Kara Walker exhibit shows the large sphinx is made out of refined sugar. Everything smelled like a mixture of sugar and a moldy factory.  It was at an old Domino Sugar Refinery.  The other photo shows me next to Jean-Michel Basquiat's painting, "Untitled (Estrella)" from 1985.  It was special to see Basquiat's drawings at Acquavella Galleries in New York City.  His drawings really seemed alive and they also made me think about his poetic symbolism.  Art Exhibit in June Please save the date if you are in New Orleans.  I plan to participate in a group art exhibit at the Second Story Co-op Gallery at the Healing Center on June 14th from 6-8 p.m.  The address is 2372 St. Claude Ave. Thanks for reading!
